Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi: day visit, tour or overnight stay?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
The short answer is simple: choose a day visit if the ice art is your priority, a guided tour if you also want context about Jukkasjärvi and Sámi life, and an overnight stay only if sleeping in a cold room is itself the experience you want. You do not have to book a room to see the hotel.
What a day ticket covers
ICEHOTEL is in Jukkasjärvi, outside central Kiruna. ICEHOTEL 365 and its art exhibition remain open throughout the year. In winter, the ticket also covers the seasonal hotel, rebuilt with new art suites. The exact open areas and hours change with the season, so check the hotel’s own page for your date rather than relying on an old timetable. Overnight guests receive entry to the visitor areas during opening hours; day visitors can buy admission online or on arrival.
A self-guided visit works well when you have your own transport or a fixed transfer. It lets you spend longer with the sculptures and shorter in rooms that interest you less. Its weakness is context: a striking suite does not explain how Torne River ice is stored, how the winter building is remade, or how the hotel relates to the village.
When the guided option earns its place
The Icehotel and historic Jukkasjärvi tour combines the ice art with the older part of the village and a visit connected with reindeer and Sámi culture. That is more useful than a transfer disguised as a tour. Read the inclusions carefully: admission, hotel pickup and the village stops can differ between departures.
What an overnight stay really changes
Cold rooms are open to visitors during the day and become private for guests after the public visit ends. Beds have a mattress on a wooden frame, reindeer hides and insulated bedding; toilets, ordinary showers and most luggage storage are in warm service buildings rather than in the standard ice rooms. A warm room is the sensible choice if you mainly want dinner and the art. A cold-room night is worth the premium when waking up in the ice structure is the point, not merely a place to sleep.
Our choice for most first-time visitors: the guided Jukkasjärvi tour. It turns a photogenic building into a half-day with a sense of place. Choose the day ticket instead if you prefer silence, photography and your own pace.
