Kiruna in summer: midnight sun, Abisko and the Kungsleden
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Summer Kiruna is not winter without snow. The midnight light changes when you walk, wildlife is active at unusual hours, and Abisko becomes a hiking base rather than mainly an aurora destination. It is also a season of big contrasts: paths near town may be green while snow remains in the mountains well into June.
Plan around light, not darkness
Kiruna Lapland gives the approximate midnight-sun period in Kiruna as 27 May to 14 July. Dates vary slightly, and bright nights extend beyond the period when the sun technically remains above the horizon. Bring an eye mask and protect your sleep rather than assuming your body will adapt immediately.
For an accessible first evening, the Midnattssolstigen starts near Camp Ripan and climbs through birch forest on Luossavaara. The marked loop is about 4.3 kilometres and usually takes 1.5–2.5 hours. It includes uphill ground, steps and footbridges, so “close to town” does not mean step-free. From higher ground you can look towards the new centre, Kiirunavaara and, in clear weather, the Kebnekaise range.
Abisko for a day, Kungsleden for a journey
The Abisko and Björkliden day trip from Kiruna suits travellers who want mountain scenery and the Abisko River canyon without organising a multi-day hike. Check whether your date, lunch and pickup are included on the booking page. The booking-page description is written around winter (the walk onto the frozen lake is seasonal), so check that the tour is offered on your summer date.
Kungsleden is a different commitment. The popular Abisko–Nikkaluokta route is about 107 kilometres and is commonly divided into seven stages, although experienced hikers may complete it faster. The final section from Singi to Nikkaluokta leaves the official Kungsleden. Huts reduce the need to camp, but they do not remove the need for a mountain map, weather judgement, food planning and suitable equipment.
When summer is the better season
Choose summer for hiking, cycling, fishing and long landscape days. Choose winter if huskies, snowmobiles and aurora are the priorities. Northern lights are not a summer attraction because the sky is too bright. If you visit in June, verify trail conditions locally; calendar summer does not guarantee snow-free mountain paths.
Three nights give you one town day, one Abisko day and a weather buffer. A Kungsleden trek needs its own itinerary and should not be squeezed into a city break.
