Narvik and the fjords from Kiruna: is the day trip worth it?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Narvik is worth a day from Kiruna when the journey is part of the attraction: the route follows Lake Torneträsk, passes Abisko and Riksgränsen, crosses into Norway and ends where steep mountains meet the fjord. It is a poor choice if you have only two days in Kiruna or mainly want time in Narvik town. The return journey makes this a full day, not a quick excursion.
What the guided day changes
The Narvik fjords day trip from Kiruna lists a nine-hour outing with photography stops and lunch. The advantage over public transport is not simply reaching Narvik; it is stopping at viewpoints along the route and letting someone else adapt the day to road and weather conditions. Check the booking page for the exact meal, pickup and border-document requirements before departure.
This is a cross-border trip from Sweden into Norway. Carry the travel document required for your nationality even if checks are not routine. Winter weather can also change the route or the time spent outside. A responsible operator may shorten a stop rather than promise the published sequence in unsafe conditions.
Train or organised tour?
The train suits you better if you want the scenery from the carriage and several independent hours in Narvik. Kiruna Lapland says trains operate between Kiruna and Narvik throughout the year and recommends buying tickets online in advance. A free shuttle connects central Kiruna with its out-of-town railway station. Timetables can change, so build the plan around the actual return train rather than an old journey time.
Choose the guided trip for roadside viewpoints, photography help and a single booking for the full day. Choose the train for independence and town time. Driving yourself adds flexibility, but winter roads and a long return in darkness demand more than ordinary holiday driving. For most first-time winter visitors, the guided outing is the calmer choice.
When to skip it
Skip Narvik if Abisko, the Icehotel and a Kiruna activity already fill a short stay. The fjords are impressive, but the day duplicates part of the westbound route to Abisko. It makes most sense on a longer visit, or for someone who specifically wants the contrast between Swedish inland mountains and the Norwegian coast.
