Northern lights in Abisko from Kiruna: is the journey worth it?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Abisko is worth the journey from Kiruna when cloud cover is the main obstacle and you want a guide to choose the viewing place. It is not an aurora guarantee. On a clear Kiruna night, travelling farther may add road time without improving the sky.
Why Abisko can be clearer
Abisko lies beside Lake Torneträsk and the mountains. The area is known for a recurring patch of clearer sky, often called the “blue hole”, even when nearby places have cloud. Darkness, low light pollution and open views help, but solar activity and local weather still decide whether anything appears. Any operator promising a certain sighting should make you cautious.
The Abisko National Park northern-lights tour uses a heated minibus from Kiruna and lists a guided viewing stop, photographs, lingonberry juice and snacks. Its published duration is about four and a half hours. Confirm clothing, pickup and what happens in poor weather on the booking page.
Kiruna or Abisko?
Stay around Kiruna if the forecast is already clear, you dislike a late road transfer, or you want a shorter photography tour. Choose Abisko when Kiruna is under stubborn cloud, when mountain scenery matters, or when you prefer the guide to handle the route. A railway trip is useful by day, but fixed evening trains are less flexible than an aurora chase.
For most first attempts: book the Abisko minibus on the clearest available night, but keep another evening free. Two chances are more valuable than claims about one “perfect” location.
